Social Media Marketing With Ken English: BlogTalk Radio
BlogTalkRadio is an exciting (and free!) opportunity in internet radio for you to increase your marketing efforts, especially when you recognize it as a social media marketing or social media networking tool for consultants, coaches, entrepreneurs and business people in all fields.
To better understand what BlogTalkRadio is, think in terms of the content of a blog with the impact of audio, communicated via the technology of audio streaming onto the World Wide Web. Best of all, it is a technology which permits the communication to be saved, replayed, or downloaded by the user, making it archive-able and searchable.
BlogTalkRadio provides people the opportunity to create their own podcasts and to broadcast their message—their story or their passion—over the internet. It’s a technology that is so flexible, as Ken explains, you can pull together speakers from widespread corners of the world to simultaneously share the audio “stage,” interacting with each other and with their market. Best of all, internet radio lets you bypass the challenges that have historically burdened traditional radio—like the need to buy airtime, rent a studio, and broadcast over a tower with 50,000 watts or more.
Ken English, who is an expert in internet radio, realized after attending a conference co-led by Elsom Eldridge Jr., that his knowledge could greatly benefit marketers, coaches, consultants, businesspeople, and entrepreneurs in many fields, if he compiled it in a book. Through this realization, BlogTalkRadio Made Easy was born, and author Ken English soon found himself transitioning from “expert” to “obvious expert” in the field of internet radio.
Okay, But How Much are Business People Really Using this Technology?
On the day Ken and Elsom spoke, BlogTalk Radio had 702 broadcasts scheduled. Over the upcoming two weeks, there are 8,141 shows scheduled, with topics as diverse as the listeners themselves. As Ken points out, if the message is worthwhile, you will have listeners.
How Easy is it to Set Up a BlogTalk Radio Program?
To make podcasting easy, à la BlogTalk Radio, Ken’s book breaks it down into ten simple steps. But because podcasts are essentially passive technology, Ken recommends the attachment of a companion blog to your radio show, to really help get the word out and build your base of followers.
BlogTalkRadio allows for ’speaker-to-audience’ broadcasting. But it also enables you to ‘live chat’, making it no longer passive.
Anyone can listen to a broadcast, but in order to chat or interact with the host, the show’s guest speakers, or other listeners of a live program, you do have to register. You must also register in order to host a show.
Using BlogTalkRadio to communicate your message is free, just as it is free to listen, download, and take advantage of the wealth of information that others are providing by way of internet radio.
When you are ready to record or host a BlogTalkRadio show, you must first set up your account. Ken explains the steps to upload your show in his interview with Elsom. He explains them in detail in his book, BlogTalkRadio Made Easy. But as Ken makes very clear… it’s not that hard! And you have plenty of sandbox to play in by deleting shows you might not like and re-doing them until you get your broadcasts just the way you want.
Much like the process of writing a book to help you gain recognition as an Obvious Expert, Ken says, when it comes to internet radio, “just do it!” You can always go back and tweak it later.
