The Changing Face of Twitter, Not What We Expected

by The Obvious Expert on August 7, 2009

So who has more followers on Twitter, Senator John McCain, who did not use Twitter until January of this year, or President Obama, who built a remarkable following on Twitter during the 2008 Presidential campaign?

Well according to CNN

Senator John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) has a little more than 1.1 million Twitter followers. In comparison, President Obama on his account (@whitehouse) has approximately 844,000.

Many supporters of Senator McCain in the 2008 Presidential campaign were disheartened that he didn’t take advantage of social media marketing opportunities in the way the Obama campaign was doing. Failure to interface with voters through new media interaction was  making the ‘old guy’ seem even older and more out of touch.

But the new kid on the block, who was already cool, proved himself to be even cooler by putting the social media tools of the internet to work for him.

Seven months later; my how things are changing.

The new kid doesn’t seem quite so cool. The old guy has embraced Twitter, calling it a “great, great vehicle for communication.”

…Which leaves us to wonder, is this what people mean when they say: “the more things change, the more they stay the same?”
