So Who Has Time for Business Marketing?

by The Obvious Expert on June 15, 2009

Many years ago when Elsom Eldridge Jr.’s mentor and coach, the legendary Howard Shenson, challenged him to write a book as the pivotal component in his business marketing plan, Elsom said, “I’m teaching at the University, I’m the organist at the Episcopal Cathedral and I am scheduled to be the magic act at three children’s parties within the next week. I don’t have time …”*

*from the book: How to Position Yourself as The Obvious Expert

Sound familiar?  Do you ever feel that you would market yourself and your business, if only you had TIME?

Actually, you do have time. You have the same number of hours in your day that your competitors have in theirs. No one ever picks up extra hours for good performance, nor is anyone ever docked time for poor efforts.

The hours in your day are a given; nothing you do either increases or decreases them. You are never surprised by having 24 hours, or 1440 minutes, or 86,400 seconds, because that is how much time you had yesterday and that is how much time you will get tomorrow and the day after and the day after that.

Time Management for Your Business Marketing

A lot of people try to get you to believe that you could solve all your problems if you just managed your time better.  Yet nothing you can do alters, influences, or impacts time in any way. You can manage money, people, and even your weight, but time defies management.

Google the words, “Time Management”. You will get millions of responses (billions if you don’t include the quotation marks.) Libraries and bookstores are filled with books on the topic of time management, all promising to help you get your life under control through the management of time  …  which is really funny since you and I have already figured out that time, itself, is not “manageable”.

But while you cannot  manage time, you can certainly manage you. Your own life is the one thing over which you have the most control; the greatest capability to change, create, and reinvent—not just once or twice, but over and over again.

Want to do a better job marketing your business or consulting or coaching practice? Then choose to do it; make business marketing or business branding a scheduled event on your calendar and in your routine.

There’s so much in life you cannot change. You can’t change the global economy, the weather, or the outcome of Game 5 of the NBA Finals. And you most certainly cannot change time. But like Elsom Eldridge, who once claimed that ‘he did not have time,’ you can change you. You can change what you choose to do with the seconds, minutes, and hours of your life. Time will never be manageable, but you, your business, and your business marketing certainly can be!

I certainly can’t argue your point and what a great one it is! Unfortunately, anyone who answers “Not me!” is going to start having more and more time on their hands.

YES! You so totally ‘get’ this message. Anyone in business today simply does not have time ‘not’ to market. Thanks for the comment and thanks for being a part of Obvious Expert.
