Who could say it better than Larry the Cable Guy, when he so intuitively observed, “The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese in the trap.”
Social media marketing, it seems, may work exactly this same way.
Be the Second Mouse
Surprisingly, this is one case where early adopting isn’t nearly as important as, shall we say, ‘deliberative adopting’.
Yes, it IS time to incorporate the tools of social media marketing in your business or consulting practice. But those who use these tools most effectively will be consultants, coaches, or business people who:
1. Are able to wade through the swirling sea of misinformation, seeking out what is valid, substantive, and proven.
2. Take the time to determine which efforts connect them with their market and with the people who genuinely want to be engaged with their business.
3. Resist the temptation to connect with large numbers of people, who will never represent their target market, purely for the sake of amassing a large body count.
4. Create and follow a social media marketing plan that they revisit regularly and adjust as new options become available and social media marketing trends in their field become better defined.
What Social Media Tools Are and What They Are Not
Social media marketing tools such as LinkedIn, Facebook, blogs, Twitter, and YouTube, are not a replacement for using search engine optimization strategies to help you better reach your online market. Instead, they are a whole new tactic, created from a distinctively fresh perspective and designed to result in a different outcome and a different type of market response. And they are probably best demonstrated by the mouse that gets there second.

You can learn more about the tools of social media every day here at the Obvious Expert, as well as by joining us, Mark Eldridge and Elsom Eldridge III, at the Social Media Academy’s free webinar, Friday, July 10th, 9AM-10AM (PST) http://www.socialmedia-academy.com/html/us-introwebinar.cfm
(And yes, this would have been a great place to include a video of Larry the Cable Guy, but we simply could not find one that passed a “G” Rating, although we had lots of laughs looking.)
